چکیده

We study the cross-correlation between 212 Mg II quasar absorption systems and ∼ 20,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 in the redshift range 0.46 z6 0.8. The Mg II systems were selected to have λλ2796 & 2803 rest-frame equivalent widths >1.0 Å and identifications confirmed by the Fe II λ2600 or Mg I λ2852 lines. Over comoving scales 0.05–13h Mpc, the Mg II–LRG cross-correlation has an amplitude 0.67 ± 0.09 times that of the LRG–LRG auto-correlation. Since LRGs have halomasses greater than 3.5 × 10 M⊙ for MR . −21, this relative amplitude implies that the absorber host-galaxies have halo-masses greater than ∼ 2–8× 10 M⊙. For 10 M⊙ LRGs, the absorber host-galaxies have halo-masses 0.5–2.5×10 M⊙. Our results appear consistent with those of Steidel et al. (1994) who found that Mg II absorbers with W r > 0.3 Å are associated with ∼0.7L B galaxies.

A Cross-correlation Analysis of Mg Ii Absorption Line Systems and Luminous Red Galaxies from the Sdss Dr5

We analyze the cross-correlation of Mg II (λ2796, 2803) quasar absorption systems with luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from the Fifth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The absorption line sample consists of 2,705 unambiguously intervening Mg II absorption systems, detected at a 4σ level, covering a redshift range (0.36≤zabs≤0.8) and a rest equivalent width range of 0.8Å ≤ W r ≤5.0Å. We...

Measuring the halo mass of Mg ii absorbers from their cross-correlation with Luminous Red Galaxies

We study the cross-correlation between 716 Mg ii quasar absorption systems and ∼ 100,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 in the redshift range 0.4 6 z 6 0.8. The Mg ii systems were selected to have λλ2796 & 2803 rest-frame equivalent widths > 1.0 Å and identifications confirmed by the Fe ii λ2600 or Mg i λ2852 lines. Over co-moving scales 0...

The dark matter haloes and host galaxies of Mg II absorbers at z ∼ 1

Strong foreground absorption features from singly ionized magnesium (Mg II) are commonly observed in the spectra of quasars and are presumed to probe a wide range of galactic environments. To date, measurements of the average dark matter (DM) halo masses of intervening Mg II absorbers by way of large-scale cross-correlations with luminous galaxies have been limited to z < 0.7. In this work, we ...

K - band Imaging of strong Ca II - absorber host galaxies at z ∼ 1 Paul

We present K-band imaging of fields around 30 strong Ca II absorption line systems, at 0.7 < z < 1.1, three of which are confirmed Damped Lyman-α systems. A significant excess of galaxies is found within 6. 0 (≃50 kpc) from the absorber line-of-sight. The excess galaxies are preferentially luminous compared to the population of field galaxies. A model in which field galaxies possess a luminosit...

New perspectives on strong z ≃ 0 . 5 Mg II absorbers : are halo - mass and equivalent width anti - correlated ?

We measure the mean halo-mass of z ≃ 0.5 Mg II absorbers using the cross-correlation (over co-moving scales 0.05–13h Mpc) between 1806 Mg II quasar absorption systems and ∼ 250,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs), both selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3. The Mg II systems have λ2796 rest-frame equivalent widths W r & 0.3 Å. From the ratio of the Mg II–LRG cross-correlation t...
